Married, we have one daughter so far. I ran for Alta high school and was trained by Rob Murphy, he is a great coach, one of the best there is. I also ran for Southern Utah University.

Good fast track workout today. We ran a max effort 800m and 3x300 at 40-43 seconds. For the 800m I managed to PR by 2 seconds after a slow first lap, I wasn't sure what pace I was running the first 400m but it was too easy, I ran 64 and so I had to pick it up the 2nd lap, I ran a 62 second 2nd lap but I even kicked conservatively because I forgot if I usually kicked at the 300m or 200m of an 800m, I ran a 62 second 2nd lap for a 2:06 800m. I was feeling fine at the end though, I didn't go hard enough in the first 600m. But I had fun and it made me a lot more motivated for running in general to run a fun track race. I should've taken the first Lap in 59 or so and then tried to hang on to a 62-64 for the 2nd lap. But its ok, I had fun and I'm really confident that I can run sub 2:00 this spring, I'm also feeling confident on running that first lap pace for 4 laps this spring, I'm feeling really good about ability. This is definitely what I needed to keep it going hard the rest of the season. I think i might do my morning run at home tomorrow for extra sleep and also the warm shower makes my day a lot better than the cold ones at school. Thank you for having us do this workout Coach!

Way to go Blake. Congrats on the PR. I like the way you did negative splits on the 800.

What is your best 400m time?

To be able to run a fast 800m, you also need to be able to run a fast 400m.

I would like to see you go 59 or 60 on the first lap and do 57 or 58 on the second.

What is the qualifying time for state? A million years ago when I ran high school track in Utah, the state qualifying time for the 880 yards (half mile) was 2:03, but I am sure it is a lot faster than that now.

Thanks! That would be really nice! It's 1:58 now, I usually run a positive split in the 800m, but maybe I should experiment more with doing negative ones. I think a sub 60 2nd lap is necessary either way. My best 400m is only a 55, I haven't run it much since freshman year, I think I could run 53-54. My freshman time was a 56 so im sure i could run it faster that 55.

most runners don't run the 800 m with a negative split, but I always found that it worked best for me.

Anyway, it is worth a try to experiment with different tactics and see which fits best for you.

You may try working on getting your 400m time down. It will help with not only the 800m but also your 1600m as well.
