I got in from Montreal last night and then I got to run with my old team, it was amazing to see everyone again, still feels like a dream but I had a lot of fun. I've been losing weight and haven't been getting much sleep or eating the past little while so that along with the altitude adjustion made todays run harder haha. I was fine the first 20-30 minutes and then I just had to push through the rest. But it felt really good to be back running, especially with my team! Hopefully I can get into shape fast, I think tomorrow I will do just 4-5 miles, maybe run up to the Brighton track and then hopefully I can go check out the copper hills meet, I'm going up to provo but hopefully I will get back before they finish!

Had a lot of fun on the gully longer run today, so good to run with those guys! My body is pretty destroyed from the last month of my mission so I didn't run the fastest gully run of my life but I had a good time and its one step closer to getting back in shape so its awesome. Depending on how sore I am tomorrow I might just do an easy run, probably want to give my body another week before I take on an Alta track workout, I don't want to know what kind of times I would right now haha

A hilly 4-5 miles but I will just say 4, I ran from Brighton through a neighborhood and eventually I ended up at the rec center and then I finished that loop back to Brighton with the giant hill going up 2300e which was tough. Nice run, really need to start taking asthma medication!

Nice job Blake. No track workouts for a LONG time. You just need to build your aerobic fitness. Just keep doing the easy distance runs for a while.

I ran a nice 4 miles or so with Cubby Zach and Aaron, it felt pretty good, I was tired but it was easier than the past few days haha. Then I ran a 300m hard with Read and Brandon, that was fun! It felt good to go fast even though fast right now isn't so fast, it will be soon! As I run consistently it will get easier and feel better. The plan right now I to just do aerobic workouts and getting my base back. As I was leaving the school today I walked past a group of my favorite freshmen from last year who have grown and changed a ton, hardly recognized them, but that was really fun!

HUGE NEWS:Coach Murphy is going to be featured as one of the 12 best high school coaches for track and cross country in 2016. I'm really happy about that, he deserves it! Can't wait to read the book he will be in!

I'm grateful I've been able to be coached by him, he's helped reach some huge goals. If any runner follows his instructions they're going to end up with a lot of success and more than that, a lot of skills to stay healthy for the rest of their lives!

20 minutes of swimming and then 3 miles on the tread mill and low 7:00 pace. It felt good. I've run a bit over the weekend but I don't really know how long or far because I ran new places and my watch broke during my mission. Oh well. Coach Houle instructed me to keep it to 3 miles per day for now so I will do that. Its important to remember that I'm an inexperienced 19 year old that's lucky to be on the team and he's trained many very success athletes and raised up a lot of national championship teams and Conference Champions, and Cam Levins and others like him. So its easy for me to accept his wisdom and without thinking that I know what I can do better. I'm excited to get in shape and have all kinds of fun running this summer, the plan is that I will be back up to 60-70 per week when I get to SUU this fall. Sounds good to me!

I can't help but reflect on how lucky I've been with the coachs I've had/will have. Coach Murphy is an amazing coach and without him there's no way I could've made it to the division 1 level! I guess I will just do warm upsand stuff at practice for awhile, I will come tomorrow, hopefully I can also learn all the coaching wisdom possible from Coach Murphy during this time when I can go to practice alot!

My running is starting to come together for this year. Last summer I had a stress fracture in my left ankle. It healed well, but mentally I was afraid to push it after that I am just getting to the point now where I am not afraid of doing some speed.

I have a track meet coming up this next weekend. Will be running the 1500m. Not really 100% prepared for it, but it will be good to see what I need to work on..

No Garmin and first time at Kauai Hawaii so I took my phone and set a 25 minute limit to keep it to about 3 miles. So beautiful here!!! I absolutely love it, the ocean is warm, the sky is bright and blue, everything is much and green, I love this place! I went to a farmers market and tried a bunch of cool fruit, we drove to this view over a mountain, we went swimming/snorkeling and hiked to this awesome plase called the queens bath, really beautiful but muddy. Then I went running from there to the beach to the end of the golf course and on the way home I hit 25 minutes so I walked in the last 10 minutes. So nice!!! I need to figure out how to post pictures on here.

Such a beautiful night! I waited until night to run because I've gotten enough sun I think I should play it safe. Great choice because the night is almost as beautify as the day here! The sky is so clear and full of stars and its really nice. I ran for a while and then I realized I was running in circles and so I took a random exit from the circle and turned left when I hit a for 10 meters later, so then I kept running and kept track of where I was running and when I got to 18 minutes I turned back and got to where I thought home was right on time. But home wasn't there (I had forgotten about the exit from the circle I had taken, so I walked along that road for about 30 minutes fairly bewildered until I'd explored every possibility except this one road I was sure was the wrong road, I took that one and it led me straight home. I called my friend and we talked while I was lost so it was fun. Good night 😊!!!

Tonight's run felt amazing. I ran an out and back and had a good time. My body is still recovering I have a kind of drained feeling come over me after just 2ish miles that used to not happen unless I was on a really long run, so I think Coach Houles coming back easy plan is a good one. Still I can't wat to boost my mileage to 4/5. I have a blister/bite on my left foot that's giving me a little trouble. Not sure what it is, a big red bump. I will ask my dad to take a look at it. I probably actually ran like 4 miles today because I did a little running on a trail because I had to find my family at one point. I got to snorkel at tunnels and explore a hidden sea cave today so I had a great time. Not sure which beach I'm going to surf at on Wednesday. One with big waves, low amounts of coral, and no riptides. We'll see how that goes haha, it will be fun!

3.500.000.000.003.50

I cheated today, I ran the same route as yesterday but I was feeling really pumped so I ran it pretty hard and finished it in 24 minutes instead having to walk in the last part. Afterwards I calculated it closer and realized its like 3.5 miles. So I went 3.5 in 24 minutes, that's a decent pace under 7:00. I was feeling really good. I need to figure out a better system for calculating mileage...or just get a Garmin. But I'm pretty sure the idea is that I'm doing about 3 miles, a little more probably isn't too bad a thing, better than too little. I will try to keep it to 3 miles tomorrow though, or like 3.2 to make sure its past 3.

5 miles of kayaking and 2 of hiking plus some swimming under a waterfall. Lots of fun, then I got chocolate ice cream!!! Good day so far, now we are the other side of the island so I will have to find a new route. But first I will take a quick shower and change to running clothes.

3 miles at a good pace, I had a lot of fun! I ran along the beach for a while, I ran some pretty fun obstacle things and at some parts it felt like I was flying, perfect hard pace that just felt good. Also pretty hot today haha, towards the end I was a little tired due to the heat and also because of the kayaking earlier today. Ready for a good relaxing night.

Really fun boat tour, I had so much fun! It was a really small boat and the captain was a super cool, he took us into the Queens bath which is this really cool small open cave thing with a giant rock in the middle, it was like a movie! And we saw a bunch of really beautiful places and dolphins and se turtles and an ancient Hawaiian city and we snorkeled more. Then I went on a run which went by pretty fast and I felt good but by the end I was tired and when I got inside it was really hot and i got a really cold drink and took the best cold shower of my life, I put it as cold as it could go and it felt sooo good! Nice day, tomorrow i will go surfing and hiking and hopefully run in the morning, then I leave at 9pm and get back to Utah at like 10am!

Sorry I missed you today Blake.

Enough with the 3 miles. You aren't that fragile. You have NO history of injury. Go run some.

From Blake Bennion on Tue, May 10, 2016 at 20:59:08 from 208.54.5.252

I would but Coach Houle and Coach Limpf want me to stick to 3 miles and I dont want to have low coachability before I even get to SUU.

From Rob Murphy on Tue, May 10, 2016 at 21:03:07 from 24.10.247.181

Did they say why they wanted you to stick to 3 miles? The let Cam Levins run 200 miles/week.

From Blake Bennion on Tue, May 10, 2016 at 22:30:28 from 208.54.5.252

Yeah they said they're really conservative with returning missionaries to make sure they don't burn out or anything before I got there but they'll work me up to like 60-70 mile week by the time I go to SUU.

From MarkS on Thu, May 12, 2016 at 01:35:55 from 210.153.160.233

I agree with Rob...I think you could start increasing mileage a little. Even if it is only every other day. You don't want to suddenly raise your mileage when you go down to SUU. It is better to gradually work up to it now...I would think....

I ran a mile on the treadmill and went down to 6:30 pace and was feeling fine, I think the pace I've been running lately is about 6:45 during these 3 mile runs, so I guess my I've been doing a little bit over 3 but its about 3 so I think it ok. 3 miles of hard running, it was im the low 18 minutes range is my guess. I ran pretty hard up to the rec center and then I got on tread mill and ran in the low 6:00 range until the last quarter to half mile when I sped up to sub 6:00 and the 5:00 flat for the last few hundred meters, so it was fun. Then I ran for another minute at 7:00 to let it cool down, so I guess it was a little over 3 miles. I'm allowed to do some races this summer so im excited for that, im thinking sandy classic and draper days, I'd like to try out a 10k but probably not a good idea on this mileage.

I usually do a little over three just to be sure. Today's run was pretty good. I think the weight I lost on my mission is staying off which is good because that's going to be a huge help in tranfering over to the next level. I'm still hanging around 145 which is a nice drop from the 155-165 I was always at in high school. It just took getting sick enough that I lost most of my muscle! But especially for the 8k/10k I think it will help, I think I will finally be able to be as good at cross as I am at track and hopefully just better at both! Although I might put weight back on once I actually start training hard, my body is weird like that. I guess I will see. I'm supposed to get the summer training plan soon and I can't wait.

My leg was hurting this morning, around the fibula, so I was a little worried, I'm pretty darn sure it's not a stress fracture because it would be really sad if my body got one on like 3 miles a day. I think I might have hurt my muscle somehow from stretching it out too much yesterday trying to get rid of the restless leg discomfort. So I'm pretty sure it's just an upset muscle but I'm a little cautious, I will ice it and I think I will have to just play it by ear tonight when I run.

I got home in 11 minutes so pretty good! Then I showered really fast and got dressed and I still got to work 15 minutes early so I was pretty happy with that.

Ran with the team today, a warm up 1.5 miles and then a hard 1.5, and then did it again to cool down and ran another.5 miles in the parking lot to get to 5. There are some fast guys on this year's team! My butts gotten kicked the past couple of days haha, but that's how you get faster, it's been fun, don't want to see my time at the Sandy classic but it will be a lot of fun!

I cooled down with Coach Murphy and then a little more with pulpy. I can't wait for Draper days, haven't decided on a goal for that, it will probably be a pace goal though. Like 5:30 or faster per mile or something, I'm hoping I get to increase my mileage for the month of July so that will help.

Went for a 6.25 mile run but sprained my ankle 5 miles in. I felt the tear and heard some pops but it wasn't that bad. I walked home just fine. I was looking forward to Alta run but I think I should play it safe go easy on it and hopefully it will be back to normal for Draper days but if not its not a big deal.

Still have a headache that's giving me trouble but great race today. I went out at a good place and held on the entire race. The reoccurring problem is that I don't have a watch anymore and I haven't gotten a new one. I felt good though besides feeling like I was about to pass out the whole time haha. I got in sight of the finish line but I was like no way that has to be the mile left mark or that it was a two loop race or something because it felt shorter. So I came up to battle this giant corner canyon kid but I was like I'm going to look really stupid if this isn't the finish, so I backed off which was a mistake but I still finished in the same time I did 2 years ago before my senior season of cross country and I was putting in double the mileage I am now back then. I also got the OK to start increasing my mileage again so next week I will probably go for 40-45 miles or so on 7 days. Turns out that corner canyon kid ran like 4:26 this year so I feel pretty good about sticking with him. Post mission Blake is going to be faster! I cooled down with Andrew Lawson, good to see him before he leaves next week.

Thanks, yeah I gave a good effort and still had room for a big kick. But good news is that I have a month before I show up to suu and I'm good shape on 25-30 miles so by the time I get up there I think maybe I will be able to turn some heads at the progession run :).

Recovery run, I'm sore and still feeling really weird with the headache and stuff. My body control kind of shakes and doesn't do what I tell it to for a second. But running isn't making whatever it is worse so no problem. I was going to go for just and easy 2 miles, then I thought of doing like 5.5 but some obnoxious bikers trying to be as loud as possible going around the neighborhood turned me in a mile early, also soreness haha.

Ran 8 miles in the gully with Ian and a couple other guys too for part of it. It felt good and was easy. My body is just getting used to longer runs again haha. Tomorrow Im going to run with Andrew Brewer, not sure how far we are going for but I will get to at least 5-6 tomorrow. Then Wednesday and Thursday I will run with the team and that will be a lot of fun. Then Friday and Saturday I need to do my weekly specified workouts, not ideal do to them back to back but oh well. I think my schedule for the remaining weeks will be Monday Wednesday and Thursday with Alta team. Tuesday will be my 3 mile tempo day. Friday will be my 12x1 minute interval run, Saturday or Sunday will be my day off if I need one and the other one or both will be easy long runs. Also I checked my weight today and I'm down to 140 flat, so that is going to help a ton with cross country and running in general! That means I'm 15-20 pounds down from what I was in high school, I feel like I could be a lot faster this year just with that!

I'm so excited for cross country, I think I will really be able to run fast this year! How fast I don't know, but I have a feeling it's going to be a lot faster than before!

Oh! And I met a really cute stray cat on the cooldown, wish I could have taken it home but...wait it could have been an outdoor cat, dang it! Ok if I see it again I shall make claim.

Good run at Alta today, I felt better than when I ran it 2 weeks ago. I ran with Brandon Ian Zach and coach Murphy during different parts of the run. Brandon is doing really good, he ran very well today, especially on the uphills, he got the most out of the workout! I felt pretty good, maybe 10 miles was a little more than I should have done today but I feel ok haha. I just need to keep to easier runs on grass the next few days, and the 3 mile tempo. I have 3 weeks of training left before I move down to Cedar City. My goal for the tempo on Saturday is under 17:00, my other goal is to buy a new watch before that tempo run so I don't have to carry my phone.

Today is hot! I ran a good pace for today's run, good stuff. It didn't feel like a recovery run because its like 105 out there but 50% was on grass so not bad. My body feels like it wanted a nice and cool 8 miles this morning, part ofnme also didn't want to iump from 30 to 50+ miles in one week so I'm taking this weekend a little easier. Tomorrow will be like 5-7 miles with the 3 mile timed run in there, my goal range is 5:30-5:40, I figure if I want to be a contributing member of the team next year or the year after I need to be under 5:00 pace for 3 miles timed. I want to run under 5:20 pace for my last timed run before I leave for suu. That would put me in about as good xc shape as I've ever been before I get there and start doing speed workouts and stuff.

Easy weekend finished with an easy run. This week I'm planning on

Monday: 8-10 in the gully with the team

Tuesday: 7 total with 3 miles timed. I am going to try and stay under 5:30 pace for the 3 and if I can for the first 2 then I will run max effort for the last mile.

Wednesday: 10 at Porter Rockwell with the team

Thursday: 10 at Alta with team

Friday:5-10

Saturday: Maybe 2-4, maybe none. Saturday isn't an easy day to run these days

Sunday: 5-8 miles.

Then next week I will increase my mileage on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. This week I'm planning on like 45ish, next week will probably be my first above 50 since I've come home. And then I will have one last week after that before going to cedar city!

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance

Switched monday and tuesday, and I might do less tomorrow, like 7-8. Anyways I ran 17:12 for the 3 timed miles, could have been a decent amount faster but I wasn't eating super healthy over the weekend and the running app on my phone just sucks! I threw off my pace haha, it said I was going 5:05 the first lap so I slowed down to what it said was 5:25sih and it felt easy so I was like awesome. Then at the half mile the pace it started rising, so I sped up to try and keep it under 5:30 but it kept rising, I kept it at 5:31 for a while, but THEN I came through the mile in slower than 5:40 and was like what the heck! And then it pooped down to 5:41 so I was like ok, this is stupid. So that apps pace thing is horrible, to be fair though, it is a phone. I need to get a watch, and running shades. Hopefully I can make it over to wasatch running tomorrow after I run.

Didn't get a run in before work and I finished at about 8 so Wasatch running was closed but I went home, had dinner and then drove to the gully and ran at about 9:30, it was dark so I used the flashlight on my phone. Unfortunately 3 or 4 miles in my phone died so I was left to make it back with no light haha. Mostly I was just worried about my ankle, there were a few close calls but it went ok and I got back fine. I know this wasn't the brightest idea, but oh well, now I know not to do the gully at night without bringing an headlight or something, but mostly I should just run during the day haha. I'm glad I don't work Wednesdays because this run kicked my butt. I will hot tub for sure though. Also I think today would be a good day to buy stuff for college and go to Wasatch running. Today we did 60 minutes of 2 minutes hard 3 minutes easy. We got to the 4.5 mile going out. Didn't feel the greatest today, probably because I decided to do 40% of my weekly mileage in a 12 hour time frame. Train smarter Blake! I dropped back from Brandon and Tayte with about the 3 miles left mark, then Ian and I regrouped with them with about a mile left but then I dropped back again because my body was about to blow up so took it easy the last .75. Sometimes I wish running wasn't so hard on the bowels. Also I started talking to Jacob Allred who's back from his mission and will be coming to suu this fall too! I'd be surprised if I could get him to show up to a run before school but I bet he'd enjoy a gully or Alta run.

I ordered my laptop for school, so now I need to get some kitchen supplies and some stuff for my room and I will be all set! Besides packing clothes and hygiene stuff, but that's pretty simple. The suu packet says to decrease mileage in August, but since rim already at lowish mileage I guess I should just stop increasing and leave it in the low 40s after this week?

I feel great! Definitely feel I am at an improved level of fitness, I don't think I've ever felt so strong on an alta run. I felt great going up and the campground loops felt awesome, the way back was a lot of fun too. So I'm feeling confident about things! I need to get my speed back though, tomorrow I will do a few flying forties with some interval work. And of course I need to improve my core. Also today was the first day of the year that I've done a long run without having bad bowel problems. I also finally started on the vitamins I'm supposed to be taking for suu so maybe that's a factor in me feeling better too! So tomorrow I need to get up early for that workout, and then saturday I'm not sure if I'm going to do a 3 mile run or an 8 mile run. Or its possible that I will take saturday off and run sunday instead. I guess we will see. Time to start taking the weekends harder. I have no clue when the next time I race is, and I'm not sure what the progression run is that I am doing my first week at suu. Hmm, mediocre feeling run today. I slept in today and missed running with the team so that was sad. So I took today to run faster paces instead. I ran 1.5 in the park outside of the rec center at under 7:00 pace after hot tubbing and then went inside for 4.8 on the treadmill at 6:20 pace. I was going to do 6 miles on the treadmill but I was short on time.  I probably would have finished just for the mental boost but I was already running a little late. At 3 miles I was thinking of cutting it off at 4.5 because of the time and then when I got there I thought I might as well run 30 minutes on the treadmill. Then I hurried off to work. 6:20 pace felt a little more uncomfortable after the first 2 or 3 miles than I would like, not too bad, but not as good as I would like. But I only need to be running 6:45 pace on my runs at SUU this fall so its ok if 6:20 isn't as easy as I want it to be. I also saw that there were no swiss runners fast enough to represent them at the European Athletic Championships in the 800m, 1500m, 3000m steeplechase, or 5000m this year, so if I can get a lot faster over the next few years hopefully I can represent the Swiss in one or a couple of those events. I don't know exactly what times I need to be allowed to compete, but I will find out and those will be my goals! My dream is to get to compete there for 2018 or 2020! The actual qualifying standards are pretty dang fast but if no swiss runners reach those times they can send 1 unqualified athlete. So my goal is under 1:50 for the 800m, and the standard is like 1:47.6 so I'm hoping if I run like 1:49 my senior year then that will be good enough that they will let me in :p. But who knows, I haven't even started my college running, maybe I will reach these goals earlier and shoot higher, or maybe I will never run faster than 1:55. Maybe the 800m won't be a strong event in college, and I will be a 5000m runner, this year I'm just starting and getting into college running shape. I'm just going to do my best and enjoy running, but still having something really cool and exciting to hope for is motivating!

Ran with the whole team after a team meeting, lots of fast guys, I like it. We ran at about 6:50 and I went with the group that went 7-8 instead of 10 because I wanted to take it easy before the progression run. Which apparanatly is a warm up at 7:00 then 6:45 then 3 laps at 6:00 to keep warming up, then 5 at 87 per lap, 6 at 85 per lap, 4 at 80 per lap and then like faster a second each lap until 75-76 and then a mile all out. I just have the mentality that I'm not going to drop off until after the 80s. I know I can make it past the 5:40 pace and then all I need to do is be tough for those next 4 laps.

Progression run today, just got home. I felt good going through the 5 lap first progression, the last 2 laps I started feeling it a bit, the 2nd progression was 6 laps and I was feeling good the first half and the. It started getting harder and harder, when it dropped for the 3rd progression it got really tough haha, I struggled to hang on the first lap and then the 2nd lap everyone behind me had fallen off and the 3 guys in front of me started falling off and I fell with them and I got pulled off at the end of it. So 2 laps away from finishing the 3rd progression. Dang. I still stayed on pretty far, a decent amount of guys fell off before me. Nothing to be embarrassed about, not even that dissapointed. I wish I had made it past the 3rd progression but this is where I'm at and I'm going to build on this until I'm with that very top group that went 4:40s for the last mile.

4 miles, hard for a 4 mile run, no such thing as an easy run now a days haha. Also got to hot tub and hang out with the team, awesome lodge we are staying at, got a ton of free gear today!

Thanks Brandon, yeah I think to these guys this running is easy haha. We can do whatever what we want on Saturday and sunday and we start with an easy mile or so every run.

I feel a little out of league right now haha, so much talent, such high level runners and everyone at this camp is really fast. We did a shake out run this morning, we do a form mile to warm up before every run that doesn't count as official mileage but for fastrunningblog purposes I'm counting it because it kind of throwing me off that the mileage is so hard and the I put in a low mileage day.

I got to meet with my coach today and we discussed what the plan for me is, he said I did great in the progression run and I'm ahead of where I need to be so he's going to have me start speed and everything now and get me racing :). I am redshirting though so I will have to go to races on my own but I'm really excited for that. Coach Houle is amazing, he really believes I can be as great as the best runners on the team and I really want to work hard and eventually I will get there. It can be hard not to let all this struggling get to me, its not been easy to have to try so hard on each run and still just be hanging on the back of the pack haha. Today we ran a shake out run in the morning where i got 3 miles and then I did 10 miles at Navajo lake in the afternoon. I kept with everyone until mile 2-3 and then I had to bowel problems and I had to dart off the course and lost a few minutes, I tried to catch up but eventually I hit a fork and I decided it wouldn't be good if I got lost and made everyone wait my first week so I turned around haha. That place is beautiful though, the valcanic rock and the lake and everything is just great! I just need to keep on trying hard, it just feels like my trying hard is little pathetic right now haha. But I need to remember when I started out at alta I was the slowest kid on the team my first alta run and I didn't do so hot for a little while but I just did what coach Murphy told me to do for a few years and I ended up where I needed to be despite a lot of rough patches and failures. I had some great successes!

Bleh, I ran the full 10 mile run after the warm up and got my butt handed to me, I came in a few minutes after the next to last person. With 4 miles left I felt compeletely dead, like I didn't have half a mile left in me. But I made it through and Hayden came back and finished the last mile with me which was nice. I don't think I've ever felt so wasted after a run, I don't get it, like I was fine at Alta last week. Oh well, these things take time. It was a very hard run but I think I pushed through it well. I just need to trust in the coach's and the veterans and keep believing that if continue working hard and doing everything asked of me then I will get faster and adapt to the collegiate level. Coach said I need to keep it to 6 miles per day the next 2 weeks, which including the warm up is 7 which if I run every day is 49 miles so that's good. I might take tomorrow off from running, actually I will take tomorrow off and then I will do an easiesh run sunday. The other thing I need to remember is that I can't always be at my best, I will have rough patches like this and I just need to get through them. Also since I've been avoiding gluten the past 6 months I haven't eaten the best food for running at camp haha, so there are a lot of factors. I need to get back to cedar and find my groove and just get to work.

Ran with Bryan and Brady, 2 Nevada 800m state champion freshmen, they were in the 2 biggest divisions. Brady is my roommate and runs 1:53 and Bryan will soon hopefully be my roommate too and he runs 1:55. So we ran 3 miles up the canyon and then turned around and raced back and I got back to the track first! That was a lot of fun, my classes were good, I want to get straight As this semester! I think my online class could be challenging because its not only higher level, I've never taken an online class but I am working ahead and will read yhr text book very carefully!

Ran with Bryan and Brady again and kind of same story we went out 3 and turned back and the last 1.5ish miles we started picking it up and by the last mile or so we were racing again and I got back first again! Brady came in last and he ran 5:30 for the last mile so I went pretty darn fast :). We averaged about 6:30 for the run which is great, and the first mile of the 6 is easy so I started 7:20 and ended like 5:20 or something, maybe faster. Just a great run, I want to get do I can run under 5:00 for that last mile without trouble!

Seriously got 2 hours of sleep last night, I got in bed right when I should have but it took me 6 hours to fall asleep :(. But I woke up and went to practice and I did a super fast run, o dropped everyone in my group by mile 3 and kept going hard. We went to this giant grass loop and I didn't have a gsrmin so I was relying on other people, when I had done 2 I saw coach who was riding on his bike and I asked him how many would be 6 miles and he said to do 4 laps so I did 4 but when I got back I found out that Brian and Brady had done 2 laps and gotten 5.5 and the loop is over a mile. So I did a little more them I needed, it felt great though so its awesome! I guess all that grass running this summer payed off haha, its not as hard for me anymore. Road race is Friday so tomorrow I will take the pace a little easier. Today the last guy keeping with me said we were going sub 6:00 pace so I slowed to it like 6:20. But yeah, fast and fun run today!

From Blake Bennion on Sat, Aug 27, 2016 at 10:41:40 from 207.50.148.63

Yeah, relaxation is something I've really been working on here. We do a form mile after our warm up/drills/stretching mile and during both its one of the things I'm trying to change. On weekends and we run on our own and can do whatever pace we like, so like today I will go on a run at an easier pace for recovery probably.

5.500.000.000.005.50

Pre-race today, lots of grass running. I tried to take it easier but still did 6:20 or faster for most of it. The last mile I did easier. Afterwards we did 5x100m hard. We are being split into teams for the road race tomorrow, some people arent racing but out of the 24 guys who are, like 4 of us slowest/getting into shape runners are on the same team of the 3 haha. I don't think the guy who drafted our team is very good at of lol, we have some really good guys though and it will be a lot of fun. But the great thing is that 5 guys of 8 on each team score and my teams number 5 is wide open for someone to take. The top 4 are pretty solid, but I'm going to race hard to get the number 5 spot on our team and minimize the gap!

Another interesting thing, originally there were about 13 freshman runners and now there are 8. Of those 8 I took 5th on the progression run and one of the guys ahead of me is only doing 15 minutes per day right now, the top 3 are all pretty good so I want to catch up to them this season!

We had the road race today, pretty intense, flotrack is going to regret not ranking our team in the top 30 when they see we are even stronger than last year. Again I only got 2 hours of sleep last night, I need to stop taking naps. I forgot about one of the freshman who beat me on the progression run, so I actually took 6th out of 9th on the progression run I think, maybe i took 5th i cant remember. And today I took 6th out of 8 freshman. One of the freshman isnt much faster than me and he's straight out of high school so I know I can catch him soon, another one has lots of natural talent but is at like 2 miles a day, he trained inconsistently this year but he's been training inconsistently longer than I've been training consistently, but I know I can catch him the next time we will race at the SUU home meet. Then there are the top 3 freshman right out of high school who all put in good summer training and are really good runners. By the end of the year I want to have caught up to that group. My goal for this race was to run under 27:00 and I got really close! Especially considering I was sore and not well rested. The race is pretty much an 8k, shortened a bit to make up for altitude. Its the first time I've really run a race of this intensity over the distance of 5k so it was a good experience.

Really close to your goal, Blake. I'm a big fan of naps, but if it makes it hard to sleep at night try to push though. I like them after a hard workout if I have a day off, but I can fall asleep after cups of coffee.

Good long run with Mark, Mark is a transfer from community college level running, he took 4th in the 10000m national championship for community college track which is awesome! We did 11 miles at an easy pace, the last 4 were on the track but it didn't seem like we were on there for that long. Running with company is always so much easier than on your own. Then after the run we talked for another hour, it was really cool to get to know him! To give you an idea of how good our team is, Mark took 10th at the road race yesterday with a 24:50. Yeah for an 8k. Hes redshirting this year too. There was a big dance thing going on across from the track, I promised myself I would never have to go to another one of those things after high school but unfortunately people still do them in college. I'd much rather be running! Pretty good day today :)! When I don't eat in the dining hall with runners I eat with the international students and that's always a really cool experience, today I found out that one of my friends from austalia ran a 1:52 800m and he's trying to get a SAT done so he can compete for our track team this spring!

Drill laps, form mile and then a 7.5 mile run with Brady and Brian, but Brady did his weekend long run like 9 hours before the run and he fell off so I just ran with Brian most of the time. The first couple miles felt a little stressed but then it opened up and I felt great going about 6:30, felt pretty easy somehow. I kept picking up the pace thinking I needed to go faster to get in the goal range but then Brian would be like, you're going under 6:15 per mile pace so I would slow back down. We did 5x100m at 75% afterwards so that was good. Then we had weights and then I sprinted to the PE building to shower before my class at 10:00, 15 minutes after weights ended. So yeah, being a student-athlete is fun. The first 20 minutes of every day I regret my life but then I feel good once I wake up all the way haha.

Good hard workout today, first track workout of the year, I ran pretty well, its definitely a lot harder than it was back when I was used to be in good shape before my mission haha. It will come back though, I'm really happy with my aerobic fitness and my efficiency. And both of those will dramatically increased by the end of the year, and since I just barely started doing speed/strength, I'm going to be really fast in a few months, I think I will be able to run some good PRs this year.

Warmed up and did form mile and then started our run of 7 miles for me and Brian and less for everyone else in the group. We stayed in the range until the last mile it was slightly downhill and there were lots of girls walking to their classes who we needed to impress so we ended with a 5:41 mile haha. Then I did 6 100m striders. Weights were nice, its really nice because at the athletes weight room they keep food for us. I always have a gronola bar and a cup of chocolate milk after my run and before weights, so its perfect for recovery. Weights are pretty easy right now, mostly teaching us how to do everything properly. I am sore from yesterdays workout haha, I love being sore, it means I'm getting faster.

I ran with Emma, Brian and Brady for 3 miles tonight, I hadn't really talked to Emma much before today but we were both stuck in study hall today and so we hung out for a few hours and she's cool! She's really fast too and it was nice to run an easy 3 miles at lime 7:30-8:00!

Still a good race, I was a lot closer to Jake and Sage this time, 36 seconds closer to sage, over a minute closer to Jake. So I'm closing that gap, getting in shape. Hanging with the group is about all you can ask for when everyone in the group has gone 1:55 or faster in the 800m and you're the only one whose come back from a mission in the past year. Get a pair of neoprene socks, like scuba socks. You can get them on Amazon for ~$10. My (unproven) theory is that if your toes/feet aren't totally freezing, you can withstand the ice bath longer, and more frequently.

10 miles to finish another solid week of mileage that doesn't feel nearly as high as it is. I ran with Mike for the first 7.5 but he wasn't feeling well so he went home and I did a little more on my own, coming back from my little loop I passed this dinner thing, not sure who it was for but it had ice cream, it was really good ice cream, so that was another boost to the day. We went easy today but I picked it up the last couple miles. Oh yeah, I hit a deer with my car on the way home from true t bird night friday, that was exciting, theres a new dent in my car. But seriously I couldn't have even done anything, I saw the first deer and I slowed down to let it pass and then the next one comes out of no where and runs straight into my car as I'm slowing down, it was fine though so whatever. I'm getting into really good shape, I'm way faster than I was when I raced BYU so I think I will surprise some people at color country in 2 weeks.

But I got done brushed my teeth had a shower and had a great date!

It was more than 8 but we can round down. I did very well at today's track workout, it was high intensity and I still finished 1-3 on all of them, including 1st on the 2nd to last and 2nd on the last one. I've been very consistent on the track lately and I've been improving a lot, I'd go as far as to say I'm faster than I've ever been, maybe with the exception of the 400m. My body has grown stronger since I was 18 and I'm carrying less weight, things are clicking. Cool down felt really good.

Good run, woke up feeling like crap so I watched some Netflix and then went on a run on my own. I started out easy and built up to 6:42 for the first mile, I averaged 6:18 per mile and ran the 9.4 in less than an hour, all of my miles after the first were under 6:30 including 2 under 6:00, the run result said I ran 5:41 for a mile which is great! I felt good and really the only part that felt tough was like mile 7/8 I felt a little tired

Haven't posted all week! So all of our top guys ended up running and all of uvu's varsity came so more competitive than we thought it would be haha. I took 33rd out of 52 runners so I got about mid pack. 20:02 isn't bad especially at 6000ft elevation but it's definitely motivation to work harder. I took the first mile too easy, I just settled with some guys in the back and a little ways in I realized I could be going faster so picked it up and started passing people. I ran with Robby and Sean for most of the race, I thought the 2nd lap Was The last one so it was a little bit hard mentally when I found out we had another lap haha. My big mistake of the race was with about half or 3 quarters of a mile left I let the group with Mike sage Robby and Sean get a little bit away from me and uvus number 5 and 6 guys passed me with like 500 left. But with 200m to go some guy psyched me up just yelling for me to go and kick it so I just went as fast as I could and I sprinted back ahead of the uvu guys! Like that was the fastest kick I've ever done in cross country haha, should've gone harder that last section but overall a good race, it is still just practice after all, I'm learning college cross country. I would have take 8th at last year's race with my time so definitely not bad. It's been a good day! Also really big confidence booster to know I would already be scoring varsity for uvu who never replied my email about running for them in high school haha.

Nike work, Blake. I had a good laugh at the last line. Those sorts of situations happen in life, and hiring and acceptance decisions can be mysterious, so try not to dwell on them too much. Use them as motivation.

No practice today so I ran 10 miles with Jake, we made a new route and it felt pretty good. Averaged 6:53 so pretty easy run.

Good run with Jake, we started picking it up a few miles in, then we picked it up and ran 5:41 for a mile and then picked it up more and went 5:12 for the next mile. We ended that mile right next to my apartment so we stopped in to get a drink. That felt good really good.

Tennessee is really beautiful! Appalachian trail wasn't too fun. It's pretty but the trail was super uneven.

Did a 3 mile warm up and then 5 800ms with Brandon and Ian, my target was 2:30 because they were at 5k pace and my goal for track is under 15:25 which is 5:00 pace. I ended up running like 2:26 for them but it felt easy, my legs didn't feel anything until the last one which was great. It was a really fun workout!

Its been forever since I posted on here, I've been getting lazy and just going to the caf after running haha, but i'm starting up again. I ran into Coach Murphy at the starting line which was really cool! To give an idea of what shape i'm in I ran 17:08 at this race my senior year the week after running my pr 16:20 5k, so I could probably run under 16:00 on a fast course or track right now. Also it was a lot colder and it snowed a ton last night and it was clear and warmer last time. So I started out in 3rd behind a high schooler and another guy, the first mile and a half is all uphill but I worked my up to the front by the end of the first mile and mantained it until the last hill where a guy (I think daven) caught me and started gapping me. I wasn't feeling great and didn't want to go into oxygen debt so I let him go a little. When we got to the top and turned down I started feeling really good and picked it up, I'm assuming he did too because for the next mile I mostly just maintained the gap. With 1200m to go I started kicking up the only hill in the 2nd half of the course, I still wasn't getting much closer by the time we got to the top and started heading down the final half mile straightaway. I started my kick there because I knew I needed everything if I was going to catch this guy, I kept picking it up and caught him with about 200 left, he was still kicking pretty hard after I passed him so I turned it up another gear to make sure I stayed ahead. After the race I did 4 more miles 2.5 on the treadmill and ran 1.5 home. It felt good to finally win this one!

That last straightaway sure seems longer than 1/2 mile, if you kicked it in that whole way that's a great extended kick. Congrats.

Ran with Aidan and Liam today for a workout run, we ran on a dirt road I'd never been on, I liked it though. Well up until the last hill of the workout, which was a monster, I struggled on the 2 reps up that hill but for all the others I felt good. I didn't know liam was a 4:04 miler until today, I keep forgetting how fast this team is haha. I'm really glad Aidan is on my team, he's one of the nicest guys I've met, he makes you feel a lot more comfortable in a workout, great teammate! I'm definitely feeling like I'm improving a lot and I think I will do really good at the progression run next week. Love mt team, love how running is going.

Good fast week, today's run was shorter, pretty cold out there! Anyway I ran up to the rec center and did 3 miles at 5:25 pace, felt surprisingly easy, I didn't feel anything until a mile and a half or two miles in. I think it might have been because I was numb from the cold because my gluts hurt a little afterwards. I picked it up as fast as the treadmill could go for the last quarter (only 5:00 pace :/) and then slowed to 6:30 for the last mile and then jogged home easy. Tomorrow will be a good 10 miler, next rest day won't be until after Christmas I don't think, I want to find a good race to do around here over the break.

Didn't have much time so I did a progression run simulation on the treadmill, I got a mile further than I did in august before I ran out of time and had to go home because we were going to a play. But I was only 2 laps away from the all out mile when I stopped so I think I can finish the progression run when I go back. Not sure how my last mile is going to be but I'm excited for it!

I've been feeling a little lazy this week, I felt great on todays run but prior to it I was dreading it. I went up to the rec center and did 4 treadmill miles and then the 5k route again, its a really nice way to get 3 miles in! And then back home. I hope I'm not running too much on the treadmill, its kind of nice in the winter, I put it at .5 incline and all but I've done almost half this weeks mileage on the treadmill. Oh well, I'm feeling good! I'm feeling like a much stronger runner than I've ever been, I feel like I'm going to get really fast throughout 2017.

Really good run, I did another progression run simulation on the treadmill and I made it to the final all out mile this time which was great! I didn't attempt the all out mile, when the time comes I will probably slow down a little bit during it haha. But now I know I can make it. I just need to train hard over the next week and a half, get prepared for school and then tackle this next semester!
